Dr Barnardo's Children

Students examine the hardships faced by orphans in London, England, and their immigration to Canada through the 1870s to 1920s under the sponsorship of Dr. Barnardo's Orphanages. Concepts such as child labour, class distinction, poverty, immigration, and displacement are discussed using a selection of written materials and archival documents. Objects in the case assist the student in reconstructing an orphan's life in England, the journey to Canada, and placement with a Canadian family.
