Canada’s preeminent museum reveals a wide-ranging slate of feature exhibitions
TORONTO, December 14, 2023 – ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) is pleased to announce an exciting schedule of exhibitions for 2024. In the coming year, ROM will present a range of captivating shows spanning art, culture, and nature. Exhibitions set to open include Wild Cats, Quilts: Made in Canada, Immersive Earth, and the visitor favourite Wildlife Photographer of the Year. And in late 2024, ROM will present the Canadian debut of the groundbreaking touring exhibition Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. Immersive Earth (working title)
June 1, 2024 - January 12, 2025
This exciting, multi-sensory exhibition takes visitors on an immersive journey through the earth’s diverse natural habitats and environments. Within, multiple distinct ecosystems are brought to life with large scale, high-definition projections and realistic scent diffusions. From lush tropical regions and temperate climates to the dramatic ice of the Arctic Ocean, visitors are invited to experience and consider the interdependent nature of life on this planet.

Wild Cats (working title)
June 8 – October 20, 2024
Whether beloved companions, fierce predators, or great deities, felines have always loomed large in the human imagination. Through the lenses of nature, science, art, and culture, this exhibition presents one of the world’s most compelling animal families in fascinating detail, across continents and time periods. Showcasing an array of striking mounted specimens, interactive displays, cultural objects, and multimedia, visitors will be brought closer than ever to these deeply intriguing animals. Visitors will be enthralled by the vast diversity, beauty, and predatory skills of cats while also learning more about the conservation and protection of these magnificent animals.

Quilts: Made in Canada (working title)
June 29 – November 17, 2024
This original exhibition showcases quilts from ROM's permanent collection, bringing to light rarely seen examples of these locally made, beautiful household bed covers. A range of culturally significant and artistically varied quilts created by makers throughout Canada from the 1850s through to the present day will be on display. Each of the exquisite quilts document community, creativity, and sustainability across generations.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Dec 21, 2024 - Apr 27, 2025
Visitor favourite Wildlife Photographer of the Year returns to ROM with a new selection of 100 original, awe-inspiring images representing the pinnacle of nature photography from around the world. From fascinating animal behaviours to breathtaking wild landscapes – this exhibition captures the beauty, drama, and fragility of the natural world and inspires a deeper connection to and appreciation for the diversity of life surrounding us.

Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away.
December 14, 2024 - September 2, 2025
Created by Musealia and co-produced by the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away. is the single most comprehensive exhibition dedicated to the history of Auschwitz, the largest and most notorious German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. Featuring more than 700 original artifacts and 400 photographs, the exhibition provides a rigorous and moving tour through one of the darkest chapters in human history. This groundbreaking exhibition features objects on loan mainly from the Auschwitz Memorial and more than 20 other institutions and private collections around the world which have never been seen before in Canada. Drawing on an esteemed international panel of curators, this extensive exhibition presents powerful survivor testimonials to detail the history of the camp and the fate of all its victims, which included mainly Jews but also Poles, Romani, and Soviet POWs, among others. By reflecting on the past, visitors are invited to consider their own responsibility in creating a more inclusive and tolerant society.

Closing soon and ongoing exhibitions
Running until January 7 is Being and Belonging: Contemporary Women Artists from the Islamic World and Beyond, which presents striking artworks created by 25 emerging and well-established artists (July 1, 2023 - January 7, 2024).
And don’t miss Noelle Hamlyn: Lifers, running until February 19, 2024, an immersive art installation by Canadian visual artist Noelle Hamlyn which features over 20 repurposed and retailored lifejackets created from fashion garments. Also on display is Death: Life’s Greatest Mystery (October 28, 2023 - April 7, 2024) and Wildlife Photographer of the Year (November 25 - May 26, 2024).
